Would having National Standards and Curriculums help ?

We recently talked about an article we read about assessment. After class, on my way home, I started to think about something. Why does every state have different curriculums and GLE/GSE's. Why does every state have different requirements that need to be completed in order for students to graduate? Why doesn't this country have a National Curriculum or at least National Standards that all states have to follow? Would that alleviate some of the confusion about what we should be assessing our students on? I don't know, I guess I am just thinking out loud. I would like to know people's opinions about this. So please comment.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. Currently I'm observing in a different state from our program and it is very different. The standards are not the same. I agree that we need to have standards universally across the nation. It would make it easier for when people move or teachers go to another state to teach. Everyone would know what to expect and there would be no "why does this state require that but mine doesn't." I think you have a great idea. Maybe this is something our new president can look into.
